Active delivery vs estimate alone: which approach for your site in Morocco?
Two models now dominate the Moroccan market: the “on-request quote” with deposit before mockup, and active delivery where you see a real mockup of your site within 48h before paying. Voici comment choisir en connaissance de cause.
For two years, our “mockup within 48h” approach has puzzled some prospects: “how can you show something before we pay the deposit?” Good question — the answer fits in two words: active delivery. Let's honestly compare the two models.
Model 1: estimate + classic deposit
It's the format most agencies (and freelancers) use in Morocco:
- Contact + phone brief.
- Written estimate (2 to 7 days).
- Quote validation + 30-50% deposit.
- Work start, mockup, back-and-forth, go-live.
Advantages: the provider doesn't work for free; the customer is psychologically “committed”; the spec can be refined along the way.
Limits: you commit 30-50% of the budget before seeing anything. If you dislike the mockup, you've already paid. Lead times are often indicative ("within 4 to 6 weeks after deposit"). The back-and-forth can stretch on.
Model 2: active delivery (mockup before deposit)
That's what we've been applying since 2024 on showcase builds:
- 30-minute brief (phone or WhatsApp).
- Navigable HTML mockup of your homepage within 48h, built for you — not a generic visual.
- You approve the direction (or request adjustments) — still without payment.
- Firm quote written from the approved mockup.
- Deposit + full production.
Advantages: you risk zero dirhams before seeing your site; quality is visible before commitment; production time is shorter since the direction is already approved.
Limits: the provider works “at their own risk” for 48h — they therefore select rigorously; impossible for complex projects where the mockup alone already takes weeks (business integrations, big e-commerce).
Comparaison directe
| Criterion | Estimation classique | Active delivery (mockup first) |
|---|---|---|
| Financial risk for you | 30-50% of the quote before seeing anything | 0 MAD before approving a real mockup |
| Deadline before “what it looks like” | 2 to 6 weeks | 48 hours |
| Suited to complex projects | oui | only in phase 2, not for the first mockup |
| Pressure on the provider | low (deposit already collected) | strong — the mockup alone is their "proof" |
| Suitable for us? | yes, for complex projects | yes, for showcase / booking builds |
What a visual-less quote (often) hides
- A lot of “disguised subcontracting”: the agency resells the project to a freelancer, or to a foreign agency, adding its margin — and it's the one coming back to you. The fast mockup of an active delivery proves real delivery capacity within 48h.
- Vague deadlines: “within 4-6 weeks after deposit” often means “when we have time”. Without a written penalty, you have no leverage.
- A missing frame: a quote without detailed scope is a quote that will inflate. Demand deliverables, features, and posting conditions.
When we recommend... the other model
Our reputation is active delivery, but it would be dishonest to present it as universal:
- Large e-commerce & business integrations (ERP, connected stock management, multi-vendor platforms): a classic estimate is necessary — you can't show a connected ERP in 48 hours.
- Institutional projects (NGOs, administrations, tenders): detailed files, references, multi-year commitment required — mockups don't answer that.
- Full redesigns with content migration (SEO to preserve, hundreds of pages): analysis first, takeover plan, then mockup.
For those cases we have the same firm written quote with scope, deadline, milestones and penalties. Simply adapted to complexity.
The question to ask yourself before any quote
One criterion honestly sorts the two models: are you ready to commit 30-50% of budget on words alone? If not → demand a mockup before deposit (doable on a showcase or booking site, and agencies refusing reveal themselves). If the project is complex (integrations, platform) → demand a structured file in return: written scope, firm dates, milestones, late penalties.
FAQ
Why do some agencies refuse a mockup before the deposit?
Fear of working for free, low confidence in production speed, or mockups subcontracted elsewhere. A structure delivering in 7 days can well afford a 48h mockup.
Is a free mockup necessarily lower quality?
No. It covers the homepage and visual direction, not the whole scope — that's normal. It must nevertheless be navigable, on your domain or a test URL, readable on mobile.
What if I'm not happy with the mockup?
You can either request adjustments (adjustable within the extra 48h), or leave owing nothing. That's exactly the model's very purpose.
