Why your site doesn't appear on Google: 7 causes and their solutions

First things first: check Google knows your site

Type site:yourdomain.com in the search bar. If no result comes up, your site isn't indexed — no point looking elsewhere. If some pages come up but not the ones you care about, the problem is elsewhere. This check takes ten seconds and avoids treating the wrong cause.

The 7 causes, from most to least frequent

This ranking reflects what we most often find on the Moroccan sites we audit. It's not exhaustive: every site has its story, and a serious audit always starts with Search Console.

1. The site isn't indexed

The most banal and frequent cause: a noindex tag left after maintenance, or a robots.txt file blocking crawling. Many Moroccan sites have also inherited a test site indexable in parallel with the final one.

Fix: open Search Console, “Pages” tab, and check the exclusion reason. Remove the blocking directive, then request a new crawl. Allow a few days to see the result.

2. The site is too slow

A site that takes eight seconds to display loses much of its audience before the page even appears. The number-one cause on sites we see: multi-megabyte photos uploaded straight from the camera, uncompressed.

Fix: convert images to WebP and cap their useful width. Delete scripts you no longer use. If your cheap shared hosting is saturated, change hosts before rewriting everything.

3. No keyword is targeted

Many page titles read “Home”, “Our services” or just the company name. Yet nobody searches “Home”. People search what they want: “website creation Marrakech”, “car rental Marrakech airport”.

Fix: rewrite each service page's title around the real query. One page = one topic = one main query. Rename the H1s in the same logic.

4. The content is too thin

A hundred-word service page tells Google nothing and visitors nothing. Pages that rank answer real questions: scope, price, lead times, covered area, differences versus a competitor.

Fix: flesh out each service page until a customer can decide without calling you. It's not about volume, but about questions answered.

5. Il n'y a pas de listing Google Business Profile

For a local business — a riad, a restaurant, a clinic, a craftsman — the Google profile is often more decisive than the site itself. Without it, you're absent from Maps and the local pack, where a considerable share of local searches goes.

Fix: create the profile, fill in the exact address, real hours, categories, and publish authentic photos. Then ask satisfied customers to leave a review: that's the signal that moves local ranking.

6. No other site talks about you

A site with no incoming links is an isolated site. Google also judges trust from what others say about you. Without any external mention, your site starts with a handicap.

Fix: start with what's verifiable: professional directories in your sector, local press, partners, associations, suppliers. Naturally earned links count more than mass-bought links.

7. The design isn't made for mobile

Most local searches in Morocco happen on a phone. A site whose text is unreadable without zooming, whose buttons touch or whose navigation is unusable loses its visitor — and Google now crawls the mobile version first.

Fix: rework the mobile layout first: text size, spacing, clickable buttons, phone number accessible without scrolling.

Where to start, concretely

  1. Check indexation with site: and Search Console.
  2. Measure speed on a real phone, on 4G, not office Wi-Fi.
  3. Rewrite the titles of the three pages that matter most to your revenue.
  4. Create or complete the Google Business Profile.
  5. Only after all that, flesh out content and earn links.

In this order, each step benefits the next. Out of order, budget is often spent on content while the site is simply crawl-blocked.

What a 30-minute audit reveals

A useful audit doesn't take three weeks. In thirty minutes, you already get a clear picture: indexation, real mobile speed, main page titles, presence of a Google profile and existence of incoming links. These five points explain the vast majority of situations.

What takes time next isn't the diagnosis but the fix: rewriting titles, re-compressing hundreds of images, restructuring service pages. That work is what produces results, not reading the report.

The classic mistake: launching a full graphic redesign while the site is simply noindexed. Always start with the one-minute checks before committing any budget.

The cas particuliers qui trompent

The recent site. A site launched last week isn't broken: it simply hasn't been crawled yet. Wait a few weeks and submit the sitemap.

Domain change. If you changed address without redirection, the old one ends up orphaned and the new one has no history. It's fixable, but the redirect must be declared cleanly.

Showcase site rebuilt together with a new domain. Cumulative effect: new domain, moved content, no history. The site takes much longer to get going.

Company name only. Many owners type their company name to check they appear. Yet nobody searches your name before knowing you: it's not a good test.

What an optimized site changes day to day

When the basics are in place, the phone changes nature: fewer calls asking “what exactly do you do?”, more already-qualified requests. Visitors have read your services, displayed prices and projects before writing.

That's the real benefit of local SEO, beyond ranking on a query: time saved on exchanges that never go anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my site appear on Google even though it exists?

Trois raisons dominent : le site est en <code>noindex</code> ou bloqué par robots.txt, il est très récent et pas encore indexé, ou aucune page ne cible une requête réelle. Vérifiez avec <code>site:votredomaine.com</code>.

How long does it take to appear on Google?

A new site usually takes a few days to a few weeks to get indexed. Ranking, on the other hand, builds over months and depends on competition for your query.

Do you have to pay Google to appear?

No. Google Ads displays paid ads, but organic results stay free. Buying ads brings immediate traffic without improving your organic position.

My site is slow — is it really a problem?

Yes. Speed degrades visitor experience and Google's crawling. On the Moroccan sites we audit, uncompressed images are the #1 cause.

Is a Google Business Profile enough?

For a local business it's decisive but doesn't replace the site: the profile makes you visible in Maps, the site makes you credible and converts the visitor.

What exactly do you do for my local SEO?

Page structure, worked titles, markup, speed, structured data, Google Business Profile and 12-month follow-up. We guarantee no position: no agency can do that honestly.
